FINDING THE PERFECT MATCH: RAYON VS. POLYESTER

When it comes to embroidery, one of the most common questions is: “Should I use rayon or polyester thread?”

Both produce beautiful results, but have different properties that make each one better suited to certain applications. Knowing when to choose rayon and when to choose polyester can help you achieve the finish you want, while mitigating production and aftercare challenges.

The most important functional difference is bleach resistance.

Polyester is resistant to bleach, making it a practical choice for garments and textiles that require frequent or intensive washing and bleaching.

Rayon is not bleach resistant, but known for its soft, silky appearance and premium finish.

RAYON (VISCOSE) THREAD

Rayon thread is made from regenerated cellulose, typically wood pulp, which gives it a silky, natural-looking sheen. Because of its softness and flexibility, rayon is perfect for fashion garments, decorative embroidery and delicate fabrics, where visual appeal is a priority.

Key benefits of rayon thread include:

  • Luxurious, high-shine finish
  • Soft, flexible, and smooth running
  • Great for fine detail and intricate designs
  • Naturally anti-static
  • Officially matched to Pantone®

Your questions answered

If you’re unsure which thread is right for you, here are some of the most common questions about rayon and polyester embroidery thread, from sustainability and machine performance to durability, cost and choosing the right thread for your application.

How do rayon and polyester affect machine performance?

This is often overlooked, but the characteristics of your thread can affect both machine performance and embroidery quality. Polyester is stronger and slightly more abrasive than rayon, which can contribute to greater wear on needles, cutting knives and metal thread paths. Rayon is softer and more flexible, placing less stress on the machine.

The two threads also behave differently under tension:

Polyester is more likely to stretch or hold under tension, which can make issues such as puckering or inconsistent stitching harder to identify.

Rayon breaks more easily under stress, making machine or tension issues easier to spot.

Is polyester always the cheaper option?

On paper, yes, polyester is less expensive. However, the initial thread price is only one part of the overall cost.

When comparing thread properties and alternative brands, always consider the quality, performance and suitability for the application as these can have a significant impact on:

So, how do you choose the right thread for your project?

Choosing between rayon and polyester comes down to understanding your project’s requirements. Rayon is ideal for achieving a luxurious finish and a soft, refined appearance, while polyester offers the durability and colourfastness needed for garments exposed to frequent washing, sunlight or demanding working conditions.

Whenever possible, choose threads certified to OEKO-TEX® Class I, Annex 6. This ensures high safety standards, suitability for sensitive applications, including skin contact and reliable, consistent quality.
